What are Signficant Figures(Sig Figs)?

Sig figs essentially are the digits of a number that have meaning. They are used often in science and are a common system of rounding.

An easy way to think about the concept is to think about unit convesions. For instance, 2400 cm should have the same value or certainty as 24m does. Sig figs are a way to do this. Some sig fig rules are listed below:

Non-zero digits are always significant
Any zeros between two significant digits are significant
Leading zeros are not significant
Trailing zeros to the right of the decimal are significant
Trailing zeros in a whole number with no decimal shown are not significant.
